“REMOVING CHEMICAL TOXINS AND HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES FROM THE SUPPLY NETWORK OF THE MONGOLIAN WOOL AND CASHMERE, LEATHER INDUSTRY” PROJECT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED

In 2025-2028, the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations Development Programme in Mongolia will work to improve energy supply chains, maintain sustainable pollution, recover useful substances and produce environmentally friendly products regarding this issue, will be implement the project that aims to reduce environmental degradation by making the supply chain green and sustainable, eliminating the use of persistent organic pollutants, using new products to replace harmful and hazardous chemicals, ensuring transparency in the product traceability system, improving the knowledge, information, and participation of stakeholders, and introducing nature-based solutions in the wool, cashmere, and leather sectors.
In connection with the project’s upcoming launch, project coordinator Myagmarsuren.T and project staff met with the administrations of the Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association to exchange ideas on cooperation. During this meeting, Altantsetseg.D, Executive Director of the Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association, presented an introduction of the industry and the issues facing the industry, including the storage, protection, and use of chemicals, the disposal of hazardous waste, chemical technology management, and the implementation of the circular economy.
Within the framework of the project, discussions were held to collaborate on identifying persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the wool, cashmere, and leather processing industries, creating a database of chemical usage in these industries, building quality control laboratory capacity, and organizing innovative technologies to replace some hazardous chemicals, waste reduction benchmarks, and capacity building training.
